Transcription The Neck and Nape Indicator (Stress)
The Physiological Reason (Stress Reduction)
One of the areas of the body that most reveals insecurity and worry is the neck. Touching or massaging the neck is almost never a good sign.
It usually indicates negative feelings such as discomfort, anger, frustration or feeling intimidated.
There is a physiological reason for this: the neck contains nerve endings that, when stimulated (massaged), help reduce stress level, blood pressure and heart rate.
Therefore, when someone massages their neck, they are actively trying to calm themselves from a negative feeling.
Variations of the gesture (Massage, pinch, vent).
This gesture of touching the neck can take several forms.
It can be a direct massage of the back of the neck, pinching or pulling on the skin of the neck (a gesture that tends to be more abrupt in men than in women), or venting the neck by pulling on the collar of the shirt or T-shirt.
Scratching or massaging the back of the neck while looking down is a particularly strong indicator of a negative feeling or even a possible lie, especially if accompanied by a sad facial expression.
The pat on the back of the neck (Annoyance).
Sometimes the gesture begins with a light pat or tap on the back of the neck before the massage begins. This is a very specific indicator of discomfort.
For example, if you make a comment to a colleague about a mistake you made on a report, and that person first slaps the back of your neck and then starts massaging it, this clearly indicates that he or she is not happy with your comment.
This is an implicit way of saying "you're weighing me down" or "you're a pain in the neck".
They may verbally say something like "Ouch! I should have checked it," but the nonverbal gesture communicates their real annoyance.
Touching their hair and biting their lips.
Other common gestures of nervousness include repeatedly touching their hair, readjusting their glasses when they don't need to, biting their lips or the inside of their cheeks.
All of these repetitive, nervous movements serve as an outlet for pent-up tension.
Rubbing the legs or hands together
Rubbing the hands together (not the palms in anticipation, but a more nervous rubbing, almost like "washing" them) is an appeaser that denotes tension or worry.
Similarly, some people rub their (often sweaty) hands against their thighs, sometimes so repetitively that it seems like a strange gesture.
This gesture, like rubbing an arm, is an attempt to calm oneself through touch.
In women, thigh rubbing can have a dual connotation: it can be nervousness, or in a flirtatious context, it can be a sign of sexual arousal.
