Transcription Levels of Erotic Expression

Minimal and accentuated expression

To assess the severity and nature of a sexual interest, a scale of levels of erotic expression is used. At the base is "Minimal Expression."

Here, the individual experiences a mild liking or satisfaction for a particular stimulus, something that is present in most people (e.g., enjoying a caress in a specific non-genital area).

This is a subtle degree of preference that does not dominate the sexual response. The next step is "Accentuated Expression."

At this level, the stimulus not only generates taste, but produces noticeable sexual arousal. It is no longer just an aesthetic or sensory preference, but a clear erotic trigger.

For example, a person may be specifically aroused by the sound of their partner's voice or a type of texture, and this element significantly enhances their physiological response, although it is not indispensable.

Fantasy vs. Practice

It is vital to differentiate between what occurs in the mind and what is brought into action. The level of "Erotic Expression at the level of Fantasy" implies that the paraphilic desire exists exclusively in the subject's imagination.

He may become aroused and even reach orgasm by imagining a situation (such as being watched), but never executes it in reality.

The external sexual behavior may be conventional, while the internal life is paraphilic.

The qualitative leap occurs in the "Minimal Sexual Erotic Expression" (practice). Here, the fantasy materializes.

The individual performs the act to obtain pleasure. It may be an isolated or experiential event.

For example, someone who fantasized about exhibitionism decides to do it once.

Even if the action materializes, it does not necessarily imply a fixed or repetitive long-term pattern, but it crosses the barrier from intrapsychic to behavioral.

Preference vs. Exclusivity

At the top of the scale, we assess stimulus dependence. "Preferred Expression" describes an individual who has a clear predilection for a paraphilia (e.g., he prefers his partner to wear a certain type of footwear during sex).

Given a choice, he will opt for this modality because he finds it more pleasurable, but is capable of functioning sexually and enjoying himself without it if the situation calls for it.

It is not a sine qua non. In contrast, "Exclusive Expression" indicates severe pathology.

At this point, the individual has lost the freedom to respond; he or she cannot achieve arousal or orgasm without the presence of the paraphilic object or situation. The fet
