Weekly menu for lactose intolerant children
If your child has been diagnosed by a doctor as lactose intolerant, there are certain facts that you must master in order to provide a balanced and healthy diet:
- Lactose is the sugar in mammalian milk and is also found in milk derivatives: cheese, butter, yogurt, etc.
- The most common symptoms of lactose intolerance are abdominal pain, diarrhea, dehydration, nausea, mouth ulcers and weight loss.
- There are other foods which, depending on how they are prepared, may contain mammalian milk, such as desserts, industrial pastries, creams, soups, cold cuts, sausages, sauces, etc.
- There are variants that can replace mammalian milk and these are vegetable milks such as oat milk, almond milk, soy milk, etc. There are also cheeses with no or very low lactose content, such as gruyére, mozzarella, cheddar, parmigiano-Reggiano, cammembert or cured manchego cheese.
