Internal Analysis: Weaknesses and Strengths
The SWOT analysis is a fundamental strategic tool to diagnose the competitive situation of an athlete or team. It is divided into two spheres: internal and external.
In the internal sphere, which depends entirely on the subject, we identify Weaknesses and Strengths.
Weaknesses are those internal resources, habits or technical deficiencies that make it difficult to achieve the objective (e.g. lack of tactical discipline).
Strengths are the assets that enhance performance (e.g. physical power, mental resilience).
The coach guides the athlete to take responsibility for these factors, as they are the only ones over which he/she has direct control to modify or enhance.
External Analysis: Threats and Opportunities
The external sphere comprises Threats and Opportunities.
These are factors that the environment offers or imposes, and that do not depend directly on the athlete's will, although they have a decisive influence on his performance.
Opportunities can be economic resources, favorable timing or professional contacts.
Threats can be unforeseen injuries, superior opponents or changes in regulations.
Recognizing these elements allows the athlete to stop fighting against the inevitable and start navigating the context intelligently, adapting his sail to the wind that is blowing, whether for or against.
Generating crossover strategies
The real value of the SWOT is not the diagnosis, but the strategic action that derives from crossing these data.
Once the four quadrants have been mapped, the coach helps to generate specific strategies.
For example: How can we use this Strength to take advantage of this Opportunity (offensive strategy)?
How can we use this Strength to neutralize that Threat (defensive strategy)?
In addition, we work on reframing: a small change of perspective can turn an apparent threat into a learning opportunity.
This reflective exercise transforms anxiety about uncertainty into a structured and realistic battle plan.
Summary
SWOT diagnoses the competitive situation by analyzing internal and external factors of the athlete or team. Strengths and weaknesses depend on the subject, who must assume responsibility.
Threats and opportunities come from the environment, such as injuries or available economic resources. Recognizing these elements allows one to navigate the context intelligently, adapting the strategy accordingly.
The real value lies in cross-referencing data to generate specific offensive or defensive strategies. This thoughtful exercise transforms uncertainty into a structured and realistic battle plan.
