According to the Oxford Languages dictionary, teaching is the knowledge, idea, experience, skill or set of them that one person learns from another or from something. It is also defined as the transmission of these elements to a person who does not have them.

Likewise, instruction is defined as the indication, usually within a series of them, given, sometimes as an order, to do something correctly.

The main difference between coaching and other teaching and learning processes lies in the role of the coachee or client, who has a leading role in the relationship established with the coach. In coaching, a space for reflection is created to improve and find new alternatives. The client becomes aware of his or her reality and determines the direction and actions he or she wants to take.

Coaching assumes that the person has the potential and the will to move forward, and that he/she can find his/her own answers.

Coaching is often confused with mentoring. Both processes involve learning, confidentiality and privacy, and seek to improve people's lives, but they have distinguishing characteristics.

Scope of coaching

Coaching does not provide prescriptions or instruction manuals. The client must continually question his or her way of facing life and the way he or she works. It is a process based on constant communication between coach and coachee.

Methodologies that are not very directive are used, without instructions that intervene in the client's decisions. The focus is not on the coach's teaching, but on the learning that the client achieves by himself.

Coaching works with previously defined goals, which are specific, realistic and achievable. The action plan is decided by the coachee, while the role of the coach is to listen, manage progress, make connections and provide the tools necessary for the client's success. Achievement of agreed goals can be tracked and measured.

The time shared between coach and coachee is limited, as it has a beginning and an end, although it can evolve into mentoring or consulting.

What differentiates mentoring from coaching?

Mentoring is a teaching and learning process through the advice and guidance of the mentor. It fosters the personal development of the mentee.

The scope of mentoring is greater than that of coaching, since it helps to experience an integral personal growth, with a relationship that encompasses both work and personal aspects. The process includes aspects such as training, education, behavioral correction and resolution of personal dilemmas.

While coaching focuses on the present and immediate future, seeking quick results in the coachee's tasks, mentoring focuses on the future, keeping a long-term follow-up of the mentee's career and personal life.

The mentor's role involves offering advice and sharing experiences to positively influence the growth of the mentee, transmitting knowledge and effective strategies.

What is a mentor?

Different types of mentoring exist today, and services can be contracted to address specific issues in many sectors. However, the role of mentor transcends business relationships and has a spiritual component.

A mentor is someone who has been where you want to be and has achieved the success you aspire to, either in business or in lifestyle. It is someone you look up to and who inspires you, usually with more experience and knowledge.

In the beginning, mentor and mentee focus on learning and developing competencies. If they form a good team, they build bonds that last beyond specific topics.

The mentor may be someone you meet occasionally to discuss challenges or important questions. You may never meet personally, but their life, work or way of facing challenges inspires you, becoming a reference.

What a mentor will not do is supervise the person on a daily basis or accompany them step by step in their learning process. That dynamic corresponds to coaching.
