  • The ability to do something or be in a position to carry it out, unimpeded by anything.

Synonyms for power include strength, capacity, ability, possibility, and might. It can also refer to the influence a person exerts over the behavior of others.

Power does not have to be perceived negatively, although it is often associated with abuse, oppression, or submission, depending on the strategies employed by leaders and managers to influence their subordinates.

Each individual has his or her own perception of power according to his or her background, experiences and education. It is important to reflect on what power means to each of us, find a personal definition and use it to achieve our goals successfully and independently. This concept of empowerment is linked to self-confidence, which is key in coaching. Having power does not imply taking it away from others.

It is essential to convince ourselves that we possess the skills to overcome obstacles and achieve success. This applies to both the coach and the coachee.

The coach's analytical skills and attitude are essential. His or her ability to motivate and achieve tangible results can set him or her apart from the competition and attract clients who trust his or her ability to guide them.

The coach must transmit this confidence to the coachee and work to develop it in each planned action. One of the keys to coaching is to recognize that the biggest impediments come from our own mind. Adopting an "I can" attitude and overcoming internal barriers is fundamental to achieving empowerment.

Accountability in coaching

Accountability is a core value that builds trust and confidence in relationships. It implies that a person pays attention to his or her decisions and actions, monitoring the results. Defining responsibilities establishes the role of each person in the process, their participation and the consequences of their actions.

Coaching requires constant interaction and communication between the parties. Success or failure is shared between the coach and the coachee.

The coach must be committed to give 100% of his or her ability and assume his or her share of the responsibility, especially in the business world, where meeting objectives is crucial to the survival of the company.

If objectives are not met, every mistake brings with it a lesson, and it is the coach's task to identify these lessons so that the coachee is better prepared to face future challenges with a positive attitude.

Results in coaching

By engaging with a person or company, we also assume responsibility for achieving results. The coach's priority must be the person in his or her charge.

It is essential that the coach monitors the impact of the process on the coachee, ensuring that the coachee's well-being or health is not compromised by blindly meeting goals.

Some key elements to obtain better results in coaching are:

  • Identify the problems or obstacles that impede progress.
  • Understanding the causes of the problems.
  • Clarify the coachee's expectations about the process.
  • Continuous follow-up and communication.
  • Listen actively and show empathy.
  • Highlight the positive aspects and strengths of the coachee.

During the sessions, these issues become clearer. At the beginning of the process, when the relationship is established, both parties must agree on the starting point and the goals they wish to achieve. At this stage it is crucial to build trust and ensure that they will work well together.

The coaching process is organized in several phases, which are developed in a certain number of sessions [from 4 to 10], following a clear methodology. Despite this, it should be flexible enough to adapt to the needs of the coachee.

The methods and tools may vary, but the objectives must be clearly defined: they must be specific, achievable and measurable. In addition, a time frame for achieving them should be established. Everything should be documented to avoid misunderstandings. The coach's capacity for analysis and observation is vital. At the end of the process, a balance must be made of what has been achieved and what has been learned. One aspect that distinguishes coaching from other services is that the client is encouraged to practice self-coaching in the future.
