Psychosocial skills - life coaching

Teamwork is the key to success. Although we are individuals, we have decided to live in society because of the advantages this represents. Society is the most efficient social structure for us to develop and survive as a species. Recognizing the individual characteristics of each person allowed us to carry out the division of labor, where each person is responsible for the areas in which he or she excels best. When we think of a company, regardless of its size, it functions as a small society, with its citizens and its government.

Interdependence is one of the most important factors in any business if it is to take advantage of the maximum potential of each member. In this guide we will delve a little deeper into this topic and its advantages within our business.

Dependency

Before delving into the concept of interdependence, let's begin by analyzing dependence. Dependency, in terms of employee behavior, refers to the need for the employee to receive constant guidance from the boss. In this case, the superior assumes full control, leaving little room for the employee's autonomous development.

This system presents several problems. First, it creates an unhealthy link between the boss's stability and efficiency and the employee's productivity. One bad day, one wrong orientation or one mistake by the supervisor can completely ruin the employee's work. In addition, this system wastes the worker's individual resources, since each person has talents and skills that, if not developed autonomously, cannot be discovered and utilized. For example, if an employee has talent in design but is never given space to improvise, that talent may be completely wasted.

On many occasions, we hire someone for a specific role, such as social media management, and then discover that person has other skills that could benefit the company. However, under a dependency system, those skills are unlikely to be discovered or utilized.

Independence

Contrary to dependency, independence means allowing the worker to develop without the need for constant guidance or supervision. This can be extremely dangerous, as lack of direction can lead to poor work. The supervisor plays a crucial role that should not be overlooked. Without proper guidance, the worker could perform poorly, resulting in wasted time and resources.

Interdependence

Interdependence is a balance between dependence and independence. It is a system in which the worker relies on the overall guidance of the boss, but also has enough freedom to innovate, contribute ideas and use his or her reasoning.

This system allows the worker to do his job properly without suppressing additional aspects that could bring more value to the business. If you have an accounting team, for example, interdependence ensures that staff have room to advise, take initiatives and contribute their expertise. In this case, it is recognized that the expert is the accountant, not the boss, so his or her opinion carries more weight on accounting issues.

Thus, if the boss has a bad day, this will not affect the employee's productivity, since the employee knows how to work autonomously and does not need constant control.
