Why we choose to reduce sugar intake on a day to day basis - nutrition
What we call sugar encompasses a wide variety of sweeteners that can be divided into monosaccharides [such as glucose, fructose and galactose] and complex sweeteners [such as sucralose, lactose or maltose, among others]. The sugar we usually use is sucralose and it is a carbohydrate found naturally in various plants, mainly in sugar cane. It is composed of two types of simple sweeteners: fructose and glucose.
Our body needs various macronutrients [proteins, fats, carbohydrates] and micronutrients [vitamins, minerals] to function. Rapidly absorbed or simple carbohydrates, such as sugar, only provide energy for rapid use," says Dr. Teresa Lajo Morales, a physician specializing in endocrinology and nutrition and a specialist in intestinal health and microbiota at HLA Universitario Moncloa, in an interview with Infosalus.
According to her, it may be necessary in the case of some patients with blood sugar regulation problems [such as diabetics under insulin treatment] but, in the majority of healthy people, in her opinion, it is beneficial to reduce it as much as possible, since there are other sources of carbohydrates [even of rapid absorption] that do provide additional benefits, such as fruit or some cereals.
