Procastination is the pure manifestation of self-sabotage, it is the attitude based on postponing as much as possible those things we do not want to face, as if they would magically disappear. When we postpone a task without there being an element of force that justifies this decision, we are being defeated by procastination, it is the moment in which we must pay attention to reason and not to emotions. >Are we really so tired that we cannot do it today? It is a simple question that if we answer it honestly we would realize how many times we have suffered this phenomenon in our daily tasks.
Below, we will address some basic elements that will help you face and prevent you from being affected by procastination.
Starting with the most difficult tasks will allow you to reserve the tired spaces for the more mechanical and less demanding tasks. It is common for us to seek to tackle the easier problems, leaving those we do not want to face for the moments when they can no longer be postponed again, this subjects the individual to a vicious circle where he will now be under the stress of having less time and probably less energy.
When you have to choose between two tasks think about which of the two you have less desire to do and start with that one, when you move on to the easier activity you will even notice some pleasure for the change of difficulty.
The technique of breaking up large tasks is one of the most effective to avoid falling into procastination by feeling overwhelmed by something that overwhelms you. If you have a 30-page essay due, just focus on doing 10 pages as if it were an independent task. In principle, you will not have completed the task by completing only 10 pages, but you will be a third of the way through without the mental pressure of having to write 30 pages in one sitting.
The same applies to reading a 300-page book. If you have enough time, you can plan to read only 30 pages a day for ten days. If 30 pages seems too much, divide the reading into 15 pages in the morning and 15 pages in the afternoon. The good thing about this technique is that it has no limits, you can divide the tasks into smaller micro-tasks until it is no longer exhausting to deal with them.
It is more of a psychological trick than a productivity technique, because it is not based on bringing forward the next day's work, but it is a kind of gift that we give ourselves to start the next day's tasks with a little more energy.
The idea is that if tomorrow you have to do some pending exercises, you can advance some complementary elements such as sheets or utensils that you are going to need, everything that brings well-being at the time of starting.
If there is something that you know that can subtract a lot of time before starting to study you can advance it the night before, in this case we could refer to a household chore or personal matter that we have pending to resolve.
This should be done in a balanced way, it does not affect our rest time nor does it imply that we should do it every day. In fact, it can be much more effective if we reserve it for the moments in which we know that a really rigorous task is approaching and that we will make resistance to begin it.
