Attitude as a Decisive Factor

The attitude with which a person faces a coaching process is absolutely decisive in determining the success he or she will achieve.

Beyond the specific techniques or the coach's skill, the coachee's mindset - his or her inner disposition towards change, learning and action - plays a preponderant role.

For this reason, a fundamental part of coaching work focuses on cultivating a growth mindset.

In this sense, coaching actively seeks to increase three interconnected pillars: awareness (realizing), responsibility (taking control) and self-confidence (believing in one's own ability). These elements form the basis of a proactive, results-oriented attitude.

Expanding Awareness

Increasing awareness involves helping the coachee to "notice," to observe more clearly his or her own thought patterns, emotions, behaviors and the impact these have on his or her reality.

This process of self-observation is crucial, as we can only change what we are aware of.

The human brain possesses remarkable plasticity, an ability to mold itself and create new neural connections in response to new experiences and learning.

By fostering awareness, coaching harnesses this plasticity, allowing the individual to incorporate new ways of being and thinking, which in turn facilitates the approach to desired outcomes.

Taking Responsibility: Protagonism and Freedom

Responsibility is another central element. It implies recognizing oneself as the owner of one's own actions and the main protagonist of change.

Taking responsibility entails accepting the inherent freedom to choose how to respond to circumstances and to take the actions necessary to achieve what is desired.

However, this freedom is often accompanied by fear: fear of not doing well, of making a mistake, of disappointing others or of not achieving the expected result.

It is normal to feel this fear, but it is crucial to understand that it is part of exercising responsibility.

The power to change the situation lies within yourself, and no one will be more involved in your own change than you.

Therefore, it is vital not to blame the past; it has already happened and only serves as a source of experience to learn what worked and what did not.

Responsibility anchors us in the present, which is the only time from where we can act to build the desired future.

Cultivating Self-Confidence

Finally, self-confidence - the belief in one's own ability to face challenges and achieve goals - is the third essential pillar that coaching seeks to strengthen.

This confidence does not come out of nowhere, but is built through experience, especially by taking responsibility, taking action (even small ones) and realizing one's ability to bring about change and overcome obstacles, despite initial fear.

By increasing awareness of one's own resources and experiencing the results of taking responsibility, self-confidence is progressively nurtured, creating a virtuous circle that propels toward greater achievements.

An attitude based on awareness, responsibility and growing self-confidence is therefore the fundamental driver for success in coaching.
