Self-control is the ability of certain people to regulate their impulses, shape their behavior and control their emotions in situations that take them out of their comfort zone. This ability is of utmost importance because it allows us to interact in complex and hostile situations. We can all develop self-control if we work hard enough for it, of course it is not easy, but if you set your mind to it, you will be able to achieve it sooner or later.
In the following guide we will be addressing some basic recommendations for you to start implementing the development of this skill in your daily life.
Do not act motivated by emotions
Emotions are one of the root causes behind a large number of decisions we make on a daily basis. When we are motivated by emotions we are acting under the most irrational side of our brain. Emotions such as anger, joy, fear, among others, can easily cloud our judgment, making us value certain behaviors as correct when they are not.
On numerous occasions we have treated someone badly or performed a certain action just because we are annoyed, it happens that this annoyance disappears over the hours and we begin to feel bad after meditating on our actions. This means that we were not rational in our decisions, but acted motivated by our emotional side. Learn to control your emotions and you will improve your self-control.
Stoicism in decision making
Stoicism is a philosophy of life that lies in putting aside everything that can influence us. It is like a permanent emotional blockade before any external affectation that tries to influence our state of mind or emotional well-being. Practicing stoicism in decision making will allow you to be a reasonable person and make more accurate decisions, attached to logic and not to emotions.
Being a stoic person requires a lot of work, it is not about not feeling any emotion or becoming someone cold, but even though you know you are feeling something, you will not allow that feeling to affect the decisions you must make.
Stay calm. Avoid impulses
Staying calm is something more complex than it seems, the vicissitudes of everyday life often take us out of our comfort zone making us lose the tranquility we had. There are many ways to learn to work on mental and emotional peace, one of them is practicing yoga or meditating.
Regardless of the way you follow to achieve it, you should know that keeping calm is essential to avoid acting under impulses. Impulses are temporary situations and emotions that make us act without considering the consequences or planning a previous strategy.
When we are impulsive we move without a plan, without assessing risks or thinking about the future consequences of our actions. Impulsive people do not take the necessary time to plan more effective alternatives, they only do what they have the desire to do at the moment it arises. Within business and the most basic social aspects, being impulsive means paying a very high price, a bad decision in the management of your company can cost you bankruptcy, an event that could be easily avoided if you had reasoned a little about it.
Try to control your mind and create your own space of calm, do not let anything or anyone pull you out of it, especially when you are making important decisions. If you feel that it is not a good time, postpone everything you have to do until you return to that state of emotional well-being. It will be hard at first, but with a lot of practice and persistence you will get there.
