Transcription Self-image: how clothes and colors communicate

Clothing as a Reflection of Personality and Contextual Appropriateness

The clothes we choose are a powerful nonverbal communication tool, as they constantly give off information about our personality, our tastes and how we position ourselves in a situation. The first impression we make is often based on our appearance.

It is therefore essential that our clothing is clean, neat and, above all, appropriate for the occasion and the environment.

In a professional context, clothing should never stand out more than the message we want to convey.

For example, showing up for a bank interview in a wrinkled T-shirt and torn jeans will project an unprofessional and untrustworthy image.

In contrast, a well-ironed shirt and dress pants instantly communicate seriousness and neatness.

Wrinkled clothes or a disheveled appearance can create a negative impression before we even begin to speak.

Accessories and Grooming: Avoiding Distractions

Beyond clothing, accessories and grooming also play a crucial role in the image we project.

It is advisable not to use too many ornaments that may distract the attention of our interlocutor, such as necklaces, bracelets or excessively flashy watches. In the same way, we must be careful with excesses in cosmetics or perfumes.

A perfume that is too intense in an enclosed space or a lipstick of a very strident color can become the main focus of attention, detracting from the importance of our words.

While we can express our personal style, it is vital to ensure that our overall appearance does not become a distraction that interferes with the communicative interaction we want to establish.

The Psychology of Color: Emotional Communication

Colors are a fundamental part of emotional and non-verbal communication, a silent language that transmits sensations and values unconsciously.

The choice of colors in marketing, for example, is never random; they are carefully selected to evoke specific associations in the audience.

In the same way, the colors we wear help build the image that others form of us, sending a message that adds specific values to our persona.

Each color has the ability to convey different sensations -seriousness, energy, creativity, confidence-.

Therefore, we must be aware of this impact and take care in the choice of the colors we use, as they are a very important part of our non-verbal and emotional communication, and can reinforce or contradict the message we wish to convey.
