The Power of the Story We Tell Ourselves
Humans are, by nature, narrative creatures. We make sense of the world and ourselves through stories.
The most influential and persistent story we tell is that of our own life.
This personal narrative, often constructed unconsciously over the years, acts as a filter through which we interpret each new experience.
It shapes our identity, our beliefs about what is possible, and our expectations for the future.
Becoming aware of this narrative is a crucial step on the path to self-knowledge.
Exercise. Writing Your Biography
A powerful technique for bringing this internal story to light is the exercise of writing our own biography.
The instruction is simple: take some time to write the story of your life, from your earliest memories to yesterday.
However, it is not a matter of making a mere chronological list of events. The objective is to explore how you have made sense of those events.
- Identify the Milestones: What have been the decisive moments, the turning points in your life?
- Recognize the Challenges: What obstacles have you faced and how did you overcome them? What did you learn from them?
- Analyze the Interpretation: How have you interpreted key events? For example, was a failure "proof of your worthlessness" or a "valuable lesson"? Was a loss a "tragedy that marked you forever" or a "painful catalyst for growth"?
The Search for Factual Truth
As you write, it is essential to apply the principle of accurate self-assessment.
Try to hold on to the objective facts, separating them from the emotional baggage and the interpretation you have given them.
What is the story you have been telling yourself about who you are, where you come from, and what you can expect from life? Is it a narrative of empowerment or victimhood? A story of growth or stagnation? Becoming aware of the narrative that has been operating in the background is the essential first step to being able to question it and, if necessary, begin to rewrite it.
It gives us the perspective we need to decide which chapters of our story we want to keep and which ones we are ready to let go.
