Assertive communication is a form of communication that allows us to express our needs, desires, opinions and feelings in a clear, direct and respectful manner, without attacking others or allowing ourselves to be attacked by them. In this sense, it is presented as a healthy alternative to passive communication (in which conflict is avoided and one's rights are ceded) and aggressive communication (in which one's own rights are imposed on those of others). Some of the main benefits of assertive communication in relationships are described below.

Greater understanding and empathy: One of the most important benefits of assertive communication is that it allows us to better understand and empathize with our partner. When we are able to express our thoughts and feelings clearly and directly, our partner is more likely to understand them and put himself/herself in our place.
