Transcription Videoconference Interviewing (Skype, Zoom, etc.)

Videoconference interviews have become extremely common, allowing companies to connect with talent regardless of location.

While they offer convenience, they require specific preparation to ensure you project the same professionalism as you would in a face-to-face interview. Mastering this format is essential.

Technical preparation (Test connection, app, audio, camera).

Technical glitches can ruin a virtual interview. Before the appointed day:

Test your internet connection: make sure it is stable. If possible, connect via cable instead of Wi-Fi.

Familiarize yourself with the application: Download and test the platform to be used (Skype, Zoom, Google Meet, Teams, etc.). Make a test call with a friend or family member.

Check your audio: Check that your microphone and speakers (or headset) are working properly. Consider using an external microphone or headset with a built-in microphone to improve sound quality.

Check your camera: Make sure your camera is working and clean. Check the image quality.

Doing these tests in advance will avoid stress and last minute technical problems.

Prepare the environment (tidy background, no distractions, good lighting).

What the interviewer sees and hears around you influences his perception:

Choose a professional background: look for a place with a neutral, orderly background, such as a plain wall, organized bookshelf, or library. Avoid cluttered or personal backgrounds (such as your unmade bed).

Ensure good lighting: Light should come from the front, not the back (never sit with your back to a window). Use additional lamps if necessary to illuminate your face well.

Eliminate distractions: Inform your family or roommates that you will be at an interview so they don't interrupt you. Close other applications and notifications on your computer.

Keep pets away if they can make noise. Silence is crucial.

Dress and grooming (As if you were in person, from the waist up minimum).

Dress exactly as you would for a face-to-face interview at that company, at least from the waist up.

This helps you get into the right professional mindset.

Avoid the temptation to wear casual clothes underneath (such as pajama pants), as you never know if you will have to get up unexpectedly.

Your grooming (hairstyle, etc.) should be equally careful.

During the interview (Look at the camera, adapted body language).

The visual dynamic is different in video:

Look at the camera, not at the screen: To simulate direct eye contact with the interviewer, focus your gaze on the camera lens, not their image on the screen. Practice this, as it may feel unnatural at first.

Maintain good posture: Sit up straight and avoid slouching.

Use body language: Lean forward slightly to show interest. Use natural hand gestures, but make sure they are visible in the camera frame.

Speak clearly and energetically: Compensate for lack of physical presence with a clear voice and enthusiastic tone.

Use of camera makeup (Men and women).

Lighting and cameras can bring out shiny skin. A little discreet makeup can be helpful for both men and women in video interviews.

A simple mattifying powder can reduce shine on the forehead, nose or head (if applicable), giving a more polished and professional look. No need for elaborate makeup, just control shine.

Watch out for glasses and glare

If you wear glasses, test how they look on camera with the lighting you will be using. Sometimes the lights can create distracting reflections in the lenses.

Try adjusting the position of the lights or your angle to the camera. Rimless glasses or glasses with anti-reflective coatings are less likely to cause problems.

If you only need reading glasses, consider printing your notes in large print so you don't have to constantly put them on and take them off during the interview.

Summary

Technical glitches can ruin the interview. Before the day, test your internet connection, application (Zoom, etc.), audio and camera. Make a test call.

Your environment influences perception. Choose a background that is neutral and tidy. Ensure good front lighting and eliminate all possible sound or visual distractions.

Dress exactly as you would for a face-to-face interview, at least from the waist up. Look directly into the camera lens, not at the screen, to simulate eye contact.
