Transcription Bones

Bones are an essential element for the structure of the human body, they are part of its support and participate in the protection of different organs. The study of bones dates back to several centuries ago, where anatomy as a branch of science has been able to give a special place to this important component of the animal body.

With the aim of going deeper into this subject, we propose the following guide, which will focus on some of the most relevant basic aspects of bones and their participation in our organism.

Composition

Bones are composed of various tissues, among the most important of which is bone tissue, which is the one that has different calcified components and allows us to obtain a certain hardness and resistance. Two other tissues of great relevance are cartilaginous and hematopoietic. The cartilaginous tissue is found in the external structure of the bones together with the periosteal tissue, acting as a primary layer, more flexible and with a connecting function. Hematopoietic tissue is responsible for the production of blood cells, making it an essential part of human life.

There are also various blood vessels and nerves around the bones, so they should not be thought of as an isolated solid structure, especially if we take into account that the interior of each bone is made up of what is known as bone marrow, an area with various soft tissues and blood vessels.

Functions

Bones have several functions within our body, the best known and one of the most important is the support function. They act as columns that support the weight of the rest of the elements of the body, thanks to the bone tissue, which is one of those present in the bones, being responsible for their hardness and resistance.

In another order, the bones are fundamental in the protection of our organs, which would be exposed to severe damage if they were not present. This armor function is essential for human life, since due to our interrelation with the environment around us, we need the presence of this protection in order to survive and advance as a species.

Bone care and health

With the exception of people with degenerative bone diseases, it is possible to maintain proper bone health and care if you focus on an adequate diet rich in nutrients. Calcium and vitamin D are essential for the health of our bones, you should try to incorporate foods containing these components into your diet.

Foods rich in calcium (just a few examples):

  • Various types of cheeses
  • Cow's milk
  • Spinach
  • Chard
  • Olives
  • Lentils
