The fundamental attribution error, also known as correspondence bias, is a very common tendency when explaining the behavior of other people.
It consists of giving excessive weight to the internal or personality characteristics of the individual (dispositional factors) and simultaneously underestimating the influence of situational factors or the context in which the behavior occurs.
This bias is especially evident when it comes to explaining negative actions or mistakes made by others.
Overestimation of Internal External Factors
When we observe someone acting in a way that we consider wrong or undesirable, our immediate explanation tends to focus on "how that person is".
We attribute their behavior to traits of their character, their personality or their intentions, considering them as stable and defining causes of their being.
For example, if someone blocks our way in traffic, it is common to think "he is rude" or "he is an aggressive driver", assuming that this action reflects an inherent characteristic of his personality.
This type of attribution, "it's your fault because you are like that", implies that we perceive the cause of another's behavior as something inherent to the person and, therefore, difficult to change.
Underestimation of External Situational Factors
At the same time that we magnify the internal factors of others, we tend to minimize or ignore the impact of external circumstances that might have influenced their behavior.
In the traffic example, we rarely consider that the person might have an emergency, be under great pressure, or simply have made a one-time mistake due to a momentary distraction.
We do not take into account that people's behavior is highly variable and depends to a great extent on the circumstances surrounding them, which can change from one day to the next.
A person may be more tired, irritable or having a bad day, and that influences their behavior more than we usually think.
