Transcription Concept and nature of resilience

Resilience is a fundamental human capacity that refers to the ability to cope, adapt and recover effectively in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or significant sources of stress.

It is not about the absence of difficulties. It is about the ability to "bounce back" or recover from these difficult experiences while maintaining adaptive functioning.

Essential Definition

Resilience is defined as the process of adapting well in the face of significant adversity. It involves the ability to "bend without breaking" in the face of life's pressures, which enables people not only to survive crises. But also, in many cases, to emerge stronger from them.

It is important to emphasize that it is not an extraordinary quality present only in some people. It is a dynamic process that can be learned and developed.

Post-traumatic Growth

Rather than succumbing to chronic stress or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after a difficult event, resilient people often experience what is known as post-traumatic growth.

This means that, as a result of struggling with adversity, they may develop a greater appreciation for life, deeper relationships, greater personal strength or a renewed sense of purpose.

Individual Variability in Stress

It is crucial to recognize that what constitutes "major stress" or "significant adversity" varies considerably from person to person.

An incident that for someone may be a minor setback, for another person may represent a major stress factor.

In addition, people not only handle stress differently. They also respond differently to specific types of stress.

For example, someone may handle work stress with ease, but find family tensions very difficult, or vice versa. Understanding one's own resilience involves recognizing these variations and knowing how one reacts to different types of challenges.
