Oxytocin is a neurotransmitter and hormone often referred to as the "love hormone" or attachment hormone because of its pivotal role in the creation and maintenance of social bonds, empathy, compassion and caring behaviors.

It is released in response to positive social interactions and physical contact.

Oxytocin is intrinsically associated with everything related to love and affection in its various manifestations: parental love, couple love, filial love and friendship. Its release occurs in moments of intimate connection and care.

For example, it is released in large quantities during breastfeeding, strengthening the bond between mother and child.

It has also been observed that in women, particularly, a significant release of oxytocin occurs during orgasm in a context of deep connection with the partner, which may explain the desire for contact and affection following sexual intercourse.

Relationship to Empathy and Compassion

This neurotransmitter is also closely linked to the capacity for empathy and compassion.

It facilitates the ability to understand and share the feelings of others, and motivates caring and supportive behaviors towards those around us.

Fostering Friendship and Altruism

Oxytocin plays a role in strengthening friendships and promoting altruistic behaviors.

Positive social interactions, such as hugs and other forms of affectionate physical contact, stimulate their release, which in turn strengthens bonds and willingness to cooperate and help others.
