The virtue of Temperance groups together those strengths of character that protect us against excesses and help us to maintain a healthy balance in our lives.

These qualities focus on moderation, self-regulation and the ability to make prudent decisions, avoiding impulsive or harmful behavior.

Forgiveness and Compassion

Forgiveness is the strength that allows us to free ourselves from the burdens of resentment and revenge.

It implies being able to accept people as they are, with their imperfections, and to let go of the desire to punish or harbor resentment for offenses received.

This ability is critical to emotional health, as resentment can be profoundly destructive to the one who harbors it.

Modesty and Humility

Modesty refers to not considering oneself superior to others and allowing one's actions to speak for themselves, rather than constantly seeking external recognition or praise.

A modest person does not need to trumpet his accomplishments. Rather, he maintains a balanced perspective on his own value, without falling into arrogance or false humility.

It is a quality that facilitates authentic interpersonal relationships.

Prudence

Prudence is the strength to make decisions with care and consideration, evaluating the possible consequences and avoiding taking undue or unnecessary risks. A prudent person does not act impulsively.

Self-control and Discipline

Self-control is the ability to regulate one's thoughts, emotions, impulses and behaviors.

Being disciplined involves controlling one's desires and emotions in order to act in a manner consistent with one's values and long-term goals.

It is essential to distinguish between freedom, which brings peace and well-being, and licentiousness, which can lead to being a slave to one's desires and lead to unhappiness.
