Interpersonal communication is one of the most fundamental and significant forms of human interaction. In our personal, work and social relationships, we are constantly engaged in one-to-one communications. In this session, we will explore the importance of 1-to-1 communication, analyze its key elements and offer recommendations for improving our skills in this fundamental area of communication.

Active listening and empathy: Active listening is an essential component of 1-to-1 communication. Paying full attention to our interlocutor, without interruptions or distractions, allows us to better understand their words, emotions and needs. In addition, practicing empathy helps us to put ourselves in the other person's shoes, understand their perspective and respond appropriately. Active listening and empathy strengthen bonds and foster more effective and meaningful communication.

Communication: Nonverbal communication plays a crucial role in interpersonal communication. Our gestures, facial expressions, posture and tone of voice convey powerful messages that complement our words. Paying attention to our own nonverbal communication and reading our interlocutor's nonverbal cues allows us to have a deeper and more accurate understanding of what is being communicated. Use open body language, maintain eye contact and be aware of the nonverbal signals you are sending and receiving.

Clarity and conciseness are essential elements in 1-to-1 communication. Expressing our ideas clearly and precisely avoids confusion and misunderstandings. Avoid using jargon or unnecessary technical jargon and adapt your language to the level of understanding of your interlocutor. Organize your ideas in a logical and structured way, using short and direct sentences. Clarity and conciseness facilitate understanding and strengthen the effectiveness of your communication.

Assertive communication involves expressing our opinions, needs and limits in a respectful and clear manner. Being assertive in 1-to-1 communication allows us to establish and maintain healthy and balanced relationships. Avoid aggressiveness or passivity in your interactions, and seek a balance that allows you to express your ideas and feelings appropriately, while also respecting the rights and perspectives of your interlocutor.
