Research on anxiety and its treatment is a constantly evolving field.
Beyond established pharmacological and psychotherapeutic approaches, new frontiers and lines of research are emerging that seek to develop more precise, personalized, and effective interventions.
Advances in Neuroimaging and Biomarkers
Advances in neuroimaging techniques (such as functional magnetic resonance imaging - fMRI) are allowing a more detailed understanding of the brain circuits involved in anxiety and how treatments modify them.
Investigations are underway to identify biomarkers (genetic, neurochemical, brain activity) that can predict the response to different treatments, which would allow for more personalized medicine.
For example, identifying which patients will respond best to a particular SSRI or CBT.
Neuromodulation-Based Therapies
Approaches are emerging that seek to directly modulate brain activity:
- Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS): Uses magnetic fields to stimulate or inhibit specific areas of the brain implicated in anxiety, such as the prefrontal cortex.
- Neurofeedback: Trains people to learn to regulate their own brain activity (measured through electroencephalogram - EEG) in real time, with the aim of promoting activity patterns associated with calm and reducing those linked to anxiety.
Although promising, these techniques still require more research to establish their efficacy and widespread applicability.
Innovative Pharmacological Approaches
Pharmacological research continues to search for new therapeutic targets beyond the serotonergic, noradrenergic, and GABAergic systems.
Modulators of the glutamatergic system, the endocannabinoid, and agents that act on the inflammatory response or the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which is involved in the stress response.
Pharmacogenomics is also being researched, which seeks to tailor drug treatments to an individual's genetic profile to optimize efficacy and minimize side effects.
Integration of Technology and Digital Therapies
Digital technologies are playing an increasing role:
- Virtual Reality (VR) for Exposure Therapy: VR allows for the creation of safe, controlled environments for gradual exposure to feared situations, which is especially useful for phobias
