In online meetings, the background refers to the image displayed behind us. It can be our home environment, a bookshelf with books, a curtain or even a virtual background provided by the platform used. The choice of a suitable background plays a crucial role in establishing a favorable environment.

In these meetings, there are different background options that allow us to customize our presentations. We can opt for virtual, neutral or customized backgrounds, taking into account the context in which we find ourselves, the resources available and the audience we are addressing.

Choosing a background: When choosing a background for an online meeting, it is important to consider the following:

  • Opting for a background that creates a sense of calm and serenity can help foster concentration.
  • Choose a neutral, unobtrusive style that does not reveal confidential information, thus preserving the privacy of the meeting.
  • Selecting a versatile background that can be used in different situations and themes makes it easier to use in different contexts.
  • Backgrounds with elements on different planes can add visual appeal, creating a sense of depth and dimension.

Depth and dimension: To achieve the perception of depth and dimension, it is important to use visual elements that create a sense of three-dimensional space. Here are some guidelines to consider:

  • Select images with elements in the foreground, mid-ground and background to create a sense of distance. For example, a landscape image with trees in the foreground, a road in the middle ground and mountains in the background.
  • Play with perspective and choose images that have converging vanishing lines. For example, an image of a road stretching towards the horizon.
  • Add overlapping elements in the background to create the illusion of depth. For example, an image of an office with a table in the foreground and a window showing a landscape.
  • Use high-resolution images, as they tend to provide a greater sense of depth and detail. Avoid using pixelated or low-quality images, as they can give a flat look to the scene.

Options: There are different options for online meeting backgrounds, and the choice will depend on the context and resources available:

  • Virtual backgrounds are popular, as they allow us to add images or videos to our real environment. They provide an opportunity to show creativity and personality, either with static or moving backgrounds. They can also be a fun way to break the ice or generate informal conversations at the start of the meeting.
  • Natural backgrounds are ideal if you have an attractive setting, such as a beautiful landscape or scenic view. They are needed for informal meetings or to add authenticity and freshness to a presentation.
  • Thematic backgrounds are an interesting option when the purpose of the meeting or the topic being discussed is related to a specific field. For example, in a meeting about technology, using a background with technological elements or an image of circuitry can help establish a coherent atmosphere and reinforce the topic under discussion. These thematic backgrounds can create a more focused and professional atmosphere, which can be beneficial in meetings with specific objectives.
  • In situations where we lack eye-catching options or prefer to keep the focus on the message, neutral backgrounds are a safe choice. A plain wall in a soft color or a simple curtain can provide a clean, unobtrusive background that will not be distracting.
  • By creating our own backgrounds through design or photography, we have the opportunity to communicate our interests and values in a unique way. T
