Transcription Face-to-face meetings and online meetings

Despite being useful and convenient tools, online meetings have often been the subject of criticism and misunderstanding, especially in terms of public speaking and communication skills.

In this review, our primary focus will be to demystify the created concept of online meetings and explore how public speaking skills can be developed and improved in this virtual context. We will focus specifically on the common challenges faced by speakers during these meetings, especially in relation to the level of perspective they manifest in the process.

Common myths: In the following, we will explore some common myths associated with online meetings:

  • Communication is impersonal: It is common to believe that online meetings lack the same level of interaction and personal connection experienced in face-to-face meetings. Yet, there is no solid basis for claiming that online meetings are less effective than face-to-face meetings. Numerous studies have convincingly demonstrated that technology has enabled a level of participation that is comparable and even superior to that of traditional face-to-face meetings.
  • Technology can be an obstacle in online meetings: It is often thought that technical problems and difficulties with technology can hinder the flow of online meetings. While it is true that occasional technical challenges can arise, most modern videoconferencing platforms are quite stable and reliable. Furthermore, with a little preparation and prior familiarization with the tools, it is possible to minimize technical hiccups and ensure that the meeting runs without significant interruptions.
  • There is a perception that during these meetings, participants can easily become distracted and not be fully engaged. However, this need not be the case. Speakers can employ techniques to encourage active participation, such as asking direct questions or using real-time polling. In addition, setting clear expectations and creating a professional meeting environment can help maintain the engagement and attention of all attendees.

Evolution: Despite misconceptions, online meetings have evolved in recent years, offering numerous benefits. These include today's video conferencing platforms, which enhance collaboration by offering advanced features such as virtual whiteboards and small group rooms.

In addition, online meetings promote inclusion by eliminating geographic barriers, allowing people from different locations to contribute their ideas and perspectives.

Changing perceptions: Demystifying online meetings involves changing negative perceptions. Here are some general steps, both mental and practical, that you can take:

  • Change your attitude: Instead of viewing online meetings as a nuisance or a waste of time, adopt a positive mindset. Recognize the benefits, such as convenience, flexibility and the ability to connect with people in different locations.
  • Recognize the differences:
