Transcription Participate as a presenter at an event
Egocentrism is defined as the attitude in which an individual focuses exclusively on his or her own thoughts, feelings and experiences. As a result, he or she tends to neglect or fail to adequately consider the needs of others.
This self-centered behavior can limit the space where others express themselves and share their own opinions. This, in turn, can lead to a perceived lack of interest in people and imbalance in communication.
Manifestations of egocentrism: During a presentation, it is possible to observe various manifestations of egocentrism. Some of them are presented below:
- Conversation dominance: if the presenter interrupts or does not allow other participants the opportunity to express themselves. This may indicate a lack of consideration for others and a domineering attitude.
- Excessive focus on personal praise or recognition: Failure to acknowledge the contributions or merits of others demonstrates a desire to stand out from others and a lack of appreciation for teamwork.
- Excessive self-reference: Constantly focusing on oneself, repeatedly sharing one's own experiences, accomplishments or perspectives, without providing space for the opinions or experiences of the audience.
- Lack of empathy: If he/she shows little interest in the audience's needs, concerns or questions, overlooking or minimizing them.
- Poor adaptation to the audience: If the presenter does not adjust the content of the presentation to the needs, knowledge or interests of the audience, assuming that his or her perspective is the only one that matters.
- Devaluing divergent opinions: If the person in question quickly dismisses opinions or ideas that differ from his or her own, without considering their validity or relevance.
Self-esteem: When a person shows excessive focus on self and constantly seeks validation from others, it may be an indicator of low self-esteem. In these situations, behavior that seeks to counteract insecurity and lack of confidence is observed.
In addition, there may also be occasions when some people present an inflated view of themselves, exaggerating their own qualities and considering themselves superior to others. This distorted approach to oneself creates obstacles in interpersonal relationships and hinders the ability to empathize and understand others.
Self-awareness: The ability to recognize our egocentric behavior gives us the opportunity to broaden our perspective toward the viewpoints of others, thus expanding new horizons. This, in turn, strengthens interpersonal relationships based on reciprocity and respect.
To develop this skill, it is necessary to have deep self-knowledge and be willing to challenge our own biases and prejudices. This involves active listening, considering different criteria and being open to learning and personal growth.
Egocentric patterns: To avoid falling into egocentric patterns, it is beneficial to keep the following aspects in mind:
- Practice empathy:
