How to get enough calcium for bones if you are vegan - nutrition
For Dr. Tong, author of the Oxford University study, it is more feasible today to obtain the necessary calcium than in the years when the study data began to be collected. "In the 1990s, plant-based beverages were much less fortified than they are today," she said.
Despite this, it is not easy to achieve good levels of calcium for vegans if they do not know what their main vegetable sources are and how to get the most out of them.
With regard to supplementation, in the conclusions of the report the authors admit that "we could only take into account differences in dietary calcium, but not differences in the use of calcium supplements, as data on the latter were not available".
It is therefore an option to study and consider, which could contribute to better bone health in cases where sufficient calcium is not obtained through food.
"People should consider the benefits and risks of their diet, make sure they get adequate levels of calcium and protein and also maintain a healthy BMI, i.e., not too low and not too high" concludes the lead author of the research.
