Transcription The Myth of Lack of Ability
The False Barrier of Incompetence
One of the most common barriers that prevents us from achieving our desires is the belief that we don't have the necessary skills.
This myth of lack of ability fills us with anxiety and paralyzes us, preventing us from even attempting what we long for.
Often, this idea is just an excuse our mind uses to avoid leaving our comfort zone.
The Origin of Doubt. "I'm Not Good Enough"
Frequently, we believe that the skills we possess are not good enough to achieve the result we desire.
We tell ourselves that we are not good enough or that our abilities simply are not up to the challenge.
This limiting belief becomes the main argument we use to justify why we cannot achieve our goals.
A Practical Example. The Challenge of Teaching in Another Language
A personal story perfectly illustrates how this myth works and how we can overcome it with a change of approach.
The author of the course was offered a position teaching a complex subject in Germany, in a language that was not his own.
Although the result of having that experience on his resume was highly desirable, his mind immediately filled with doubts.
He thought: "I have never taught in my life, much less in a language that is not my native language."
He imagined that he would paralyze and freeze in front of the students if they asked him questions he did not know.
He was afraid that the students would make fun of him and that he would be fired for being incompetent.
The Revelation. The Problem Was Never His Skills
Despite all his fears, he decided to accept the challenge, thinking that the worst that could happen would not be so serious.
To his surprise, at the end of the semester the students gave him very good grades and renewed his contract.
At that moment, he realized that his skills had never been the real problem in his success.
He understood that he, like all of us, already has all the skills he needs to get what he wants.
The same thing happened to him when he believed he had two left feet and would never be able to dance, and ended up becoming a salsa teacher.
The Change of Mindset. From Skill to Strategy
The key revelation is that the problem is not a lack of skill, but a lack of an appropriate strategy.
