Transcription Self-observation for Improvement

Self-observation is a crucial exercise in identifying ineffective communication patterns and areas for improvement in our own speech.

Often, we are unaware of the verbal tics or parasitic words we use because they have become automatic habits.

Recording our speech and analyzing it afterwards allows us to see and hear how we communicate objectively, which is the first step in correcting those habits.

An exercise to identify patterns

A very effective exercise for self-observation is to videotape yourself for two minutes on a particular topic.

To make it more revealing, you can choose three topics of varying difficulty: a simple one, a complex one and one about the future.

The simple topic, such as "describe what a chair is," minimizes the chances of using parasitic words due to lack of knowledge.

On the other hand, a complex topic or a prediction about the future, such as "the future of AI," maximizes the likelihood of using filler words, as the brain needs more time to process the information and formulate the ideas.

Analyzing the recording

When analyzing the recording, look for several aspects.

First, you should identify any extraneous or filler words that creep into the speech.

Second, attention should be paid to the pace of speech, as speaking too fast can lead to using filler words and sounding less confident.

Slowing down the pace gives the mind time to formulate clearer ideas.

Third, the level of confidence and the clarity with which ideas are explained should be assessed.

Finally, analyze whether the speech is inspiring and entertaining, as these are crucial elements of effective communication.
