Fostering the capacity for self-determination enables individuals with autism to have control over their own lives, actively participate in society, and make decisions that affect their future.

Self-Determination Definition and Concept

Self-determination refers to a person's ability to make decisions about his or her life, set goals, express preferences, and control his or her own destiny. For people with ASD, this means providing opportunities for them to actively participate in making decisions that affect their daily lives. Main Components of Self-Determination:

  • Decision Making: The ability to choose among different options and make informed decisions.
  • Self-Assessment: The ability to evaluate one's own personal strengths, weaknesses and goals.
  • Goal Setting: The ability to define personal goals and work toward their achievement.
  • Advocacy: The ability to advocate for one's own interests and rights.
  • Self-Efficacy:The belief in the ability to achieve their goals and make effective decisions
