Establishing Competency Standards

To practice the coaching profession effectively and ethically, it is essential to develop a specific set of skills and competencies.

Although several organizations have proposed frameworks, we will take as a guide the list established by the International Coaching Federation (ICF), one of the most recognized organizations worldwide in the regulation and promotion of professional coaching.

These competencies define the key skills and behaviors that a coach must master in order to successfully facilitate the growth and achievement of client goals.

The Eleven Key Competencies

According to the ICF, the eleven competencies that will help you to successfully practice your profession are as follows:

  • Ethics and Deontology: Understand and consistently apply the ethical and professional standards of coaching.
  • Establishing the Coaching Agreement: The ability to understand what is required in the specific coaching interaction and to reach agreement with the client about the process and relationship.
  • Establishing Trust and Intimacy with the Client: The ability to create a safe and supportive environment that produces ongoing mutual trust and respect.
  • Coaching Presence: The ability to be fully aware of and create a spontaneous relationship with the client, employing an open, flexible and safe style.
  • Active Listening: The ability to focus fully on what the client is saying and not saying, understand the meaning of what is being said i
