Feedback and Reinforcement: Driving Learning

Continuing with the key coach behaviors, the ability to reinforce the coachee's accomplishments and provide constructive feedback is essential.

Positive reinforcement, recognizing and validating the client's progress, serves to motivate the client and contributes significantly to the learning and maintenance of desired behaviors.

Celebrating successes, however small, builds confidence and commitment. Equally important is feedback.

The coachee needs to receive information about his or her performance in order to learn, improve and grow.

Effective feedback facilitates learning and change because it allows the person to constantly adjust their efforts to achieve their goals and create awareness of their own performance.

The coach must know how to deliver this feedback in a clear, specific, respectful and development-oriented manner, not a critical one.

Coach's self-responsibility

Another fundamental professional behavior is self-responsibility. This implies that the coach must always take responsibility for his or her own behavior and, crucially, for his or her professional work throughout the coaching process.

This includes being punctual, preparing adequately for sessions, maintaining confidentiality, adhering to ethical principles, recognizing one's own limits, and always acting in the client's best interest.

Self-responsibility also means being aware of the impact your own actions and attitudes have on the coachee and the dynamics of the relationship. A responsible coach models the very quality he or she seeks to foster in his or her client.

Management and Leadership in the Practice of Coaching

Finally, the professional practice of coaching inherently involves management and leadership behaviors applied to the practice itself.

As a coach, in performing the tasks at hand, there is an inherent commitment to achieve superior performance and continuous improvement in the service provided.

This should be reflected in the adoption of strategic management and leadership models in your work.

It involves planning the process, managing session time effectively, keeping adequate records, eva luating one's effectiveness, and seeking ongoing supervision or training.
