Transcription The Power of Silence and Self-Listening in Coaching

Silence as a Strategic Tool

Closely related to the skill of active listening is another communication element of great importance in coaching processes: silence.

Often, there is a risk that the coach will talk too much, filling in the gaps out of discomfort or a desire to explicitly guide.

However, strategic silence is not a mere absence of sound, but a powerful tool.

Its main function is to generate an essential space for the coachee to confront his own thoughts and reflections, allowing him to process information, connect with his emotions and, ultimately, advance in his self-knowledge.

It is in these moments of pause that the most significant insights often emerge.

The Role of the Coach in Productive Silence

Silence in coaching is not passive; it promotes a reflective confrontation of the coachee with his or her own thoughts, desires, wishes and inner contradictions.

The coach uses silences in an intentional way, combining them with good dialectics - precise interventions such as clarifications, reformulations, restatements, interpretations or even calculated provocations.

The aim of this combination is to help bring to light the deep meanings that are locked inside the coachee, those that would not emerge in a continuous and superficial conversation.

The coach actively creates and sustains this space for reflection through the judicious use of silence and words.

Self-Listening: Connecting with the Essential

Parallel to the listening that the coach offers, it is essential to know how to listen to oneself.

Self-listening is the ability that allows the coachee to find out what is truly important in his or her life.

It is not just a matter of identifying superficial desires, but of connecting with fundamental values and deep needs.

In addition, self-listening makes it easier to assess the extent to which one's current life conforms to or deviates from those values identified as essential.

This introspection is key to making aligned decisions and building a more authentic and satisfying life.

Components and Facilitation of Self-Listening

What does listening to oneself involve in practice? It involves several active components:

  • Exploring our inner self in an honest and non-judgmental way.
  • Being able to identify one's own moods and feelings at a given moment, naming and accepting them.
  • Questioning why things happen: why we feel the way we feel, why we react in a certain way, what needs underlie our desires.
  • Keeping an open vision to what may arise, but at the same time concentrating on what is important, what is essential, without getting lost in irrelevant details.
  • The role of the coach in this process is to help clarify that in
