Transcription The Schema Diagram in Depression

The Information Filtering Mechanism

The schema diagram is a visual tool that explains how the depressive mind processes reality data.

It functions as a biased sorting box. At the center is the core belief (e.g. "I am incompetent").

The mind acts like a radar that scans the environment looking exclusively for information that confirms this belief.

If a person gives a presentation and makes a small error in pronunciation, his mind immediately "catches" that piece of information because it fits perfectly into the "I am incompetent" box.

This negative input is processed at a deep level, reinforcing the depression neural network and validating the negative self-perception.

Rejection and Rationalization of the Positive

The most insidious aspect of this schema is what it does with positive or contradictory information.

When an event occurs that disproves the depressive belief (positive data), the mind does not assimilate it; it literally "bounces" out of the schema.

To achieve this, the individual uses rationalization or disqualification mechanisms.

Following the previous example, if at the end of the presentation the audience applauds and congratulates the speaker, the speaker does not think "I did well".

Instead, he rationalizes: "They only applaud out of pity" or "I was lucky they didn't notice how poorly I prepared the topic".

By transforming a success into an "accident" or a "falsehood," he prevents the positive experience from modifying his self-image.

Maintaining the Cycle through Bias

This process of accepting only the negative and rejecting the positive creates an impenetrable maintenance cycle.

Although objective reality offers 80% neutral or good experiences and only 20% negative, the patient's "internal accounting" registers 100% negativity.

Cognitive treatment seeks to break this diagram by teaching the patient to identify how he disqualifies the positive.

He is trained to deliberately "catch" the positive data and force it into the schema, asking himself, "What does this applause say about my actual ability, if I ignore my critical voice for a moment?"

Summary

This diagram explains how the depressive mind filters reality. It works like a biased radar that scans the environment looking exclusively for negative information that confirms the core belief of incompetence or defect.

When positive events occur, the mind actively rejects them. The individual uses rationalization to disqualify their achievements, attributing them to luck or deception, preventing them from modifying their negative self-image.

This mechanism of accepting the negative and rejecting the positive creates an impenetrable maintenance cycle. Treatment seeks to teach the patient to "catch" the positive data in order to break this pattern.
