The Forgotten Basis of Communication: Your Relationship with Yourself

Often, as we seek to improve our communication skills, we focus all our attention on how we interact with others, forgetting a fundamental skill that is the foundation of all others: the ability to communicate with ourselves.

The way you speak to yourself, the clarity with which you understand your own emotions and the coherence of your inner world are inevitably projected onto your external interactions.

Therefore, before attempting to master communication with others, it is essential to become aware of how you talk to yourself.

Asking yourself the question "how do I talk to myself?" is the starting point for building a solid and secure foundation from which to communicate with the world.

The Inner Dialogue: Listening to the Voices of Your Mind

Are you aware of your inner dialogue? Within each of us there is a constant conversation, a flow of thoughts, judgments and emotions that make up our inner reality.

This dialogue is made up of different "voices" or emotional parts that often conflict. Learning to identify and listen to these internal dialogues is crucial.

Do you criticize yourself harshly when a conversation doesn't go as expected? Do you sabotage yourself before an important interaction?

Being aware of how you express yourself, what recurring criticisms you give yourself and how you manage your emotions internally will give you immense clarity on the patterns you then repeat in your communication with others.

Coherence as a Seal of Authenticity

One of the keys to healthy internal communication, which translates into effective external communication, is consistency between what you think, what you say and what you do.

Is there alignment between these three elements in your life, or, on the contrary, do you often think one thing, say another and act in a third, completely different way?

This lack of coherence, or incongruence, not only generates an internal conflict, but is also perceived from the outside, detracting from the authenticity and credibility of your message.

Working on aligning your thoughts, words and actions is fundamental to build a communication based on integrity and confidence, both in yourself and in the one you project to others.

Self-Awareness as a Foundation for Effective Communication

Ultimately, communicating with yourself is an exercise in self-knowledge. Answering deep questions about how you talk to yourself, if you are coherent, if you know your own needs or if you are aware of your emotions, will provide you with the light and awareness necessary to radically improve the way you interact with the world.
