Empathy is a fundamental communication skill that opens doors to healthier, more positive and enriching relationships.

It is the ability to feel and understand the feelings of the other person with whom we are communicating.

Colloquially, it is defined as "putting oneself in the other person's shoes," but its true scope is much deeper.

Empathy actually involves "putting yourself in the other person's shoes and walking with them for a few miles."

This means making the effort to understand their perspective from their life story, their experiences and their points of view.

It is crucial to understand that empathy is not synonymous with agreement; we can understand and respect someone's motives, needs and emotions without necessarily sharing their opinion.

Empathy as a Tool for Building Trust and Connection

Empathy is one of the most powerful elements of effective communication because it allows us to connect with the speaker's emotions and intentions, rather than just hearing their words.

By understanding and acknowledging the feelings of the person we are speaking to, we help create stronger connections and build a solid foundation of trust.

When a person feels truly understood, they also feel valued and taken into account, which opens the door to much more fluid and honest communication.

As Gandhi reflected, much of the misunderstanding and misery in the world could be resolved if people would take the time to put themselves in the shoes of their adversaries to understand their point of view.

To develop empathy, it is necessary to adopt a listening approach that prioritizes understanding over response.

This involves giving our full attention, avoiding distractions such as the telephone, and maintaining eye contact to demonstrate that we are present.

It is essential to listen without judgment, resisting the urge to impose our own ideas or give advice unless we are asked for it.

A very powerful technique is reflective listening, which consists of reflecting or paraphrasing what the other person has said to confirm that we have understood their message and emotions.

For example, when faced with a colleague who says, "I'm really struggling with this project," an empathetic response would be, "It sounds like you're finding this project really challenging. I understand why you feel that way." This response validates their feelings and opens the door to a supportive conversation.

Overcoming Barriers that Block Empathy.

Often, our own tendencies make it difficult to practice empathy.

One of the biggest obstacles is presupposing what the other person is feeling or thinking without sufficient information, which leads us to erroneous conclusions.

Another common mistake is believing that we know what is best for the other person and rushing to give solutions, when perhaps the person just needs a space to be heard and understood.

To be truly empathetic, we must stop for a moment, put aside our own ego and preconceived ideas, and make the genuine effort to put ourselves in the other person's shoes to understand their experience from their perspective, not ours.
