Transcription Mental architecture: The fast circuit

Immediate instinctive and associative responses.

Our mind deals with this constant flow of information by implementing two distinct processing systems that often conflict.

The first of these is called the automatic system, which is characterized by taking control of situations almost instantaneously.

This circuit operates with astonishing speed, requires no investment of mental effort and works by establishing rapid associations between seemingly unrelated concepts.

To illustrate its power, consider a little mathematical conundrum: if a coat and a scarf together cost one hundred and ten dollars, and the coat costs one hundred dollars more than the scarf, what is the price of the scarf?

Upon hearing this statement, the vast majority of individuals impulsively answer that the scarf costs ten dollars, letting their automatic system provide the most intuitive and quickest answer.

However, if we perform the calculation, we will notice that this figure is incorrect, the real value being five dollars.

Operational advantages of the lack of reflective control

Although this way of thinking induces us to make obvious logical errors, it has unquestionable evolutionary and operational advantages.

The automatic system is the absolute specialist in charge of executing those routines that we have mastered through constant practice.

For example, when we master the art of skateboarding or playing an instrument, it is this circuit that takes over.

Moreover, it is characterized by being a totally unconscious process and outside of our deliberate control.

This autonomy is vital to our daily survival; if we had to actively remember and voluntarily command every muscle contraction needed to breathe, our mind would collapse.

By operating on its own and without generating cognitive attrition, the instinctive system allows us to walk, react to sudden dangers, and manage basic social interactions while focusing our valuable, limited conscious attention on far more demanding or novel tasks.

Summary

The mind's automatic mechanism works extremely quickly and effortlessly. It generates instant associations and assumes control of everyday situations quickly.

This circuit allows expert activities to be performed without requiring focused attention. Thanks to its operational autonomy, the human brain avoids incessant data overload.

Instinctive decisions dominate most of our common daily interactions. Understanding their speedy nature helps anticipate the immediate judgments consumers make.
