Transcription Emotions versus feelings

Unconscious physical processes versus conscious experiences

In the systematic analysis of human behavior, it is methodologically necessary to establish a strict technical differentiation between two psychophysiological processes that popular language commonly uses as synonyms.

The first level corresponds to reactive organic states, which are of a universal nature and are gestated in a primary form in the purely unconscious stratum of the neural network.

These biological phenomena consist of automatic reactions triggered by sudden alterations in the immediate ecosystem or internal variations, acting as a collection of raw data in real time.

Because of their somatic condition, these tangible physical states can be measured clinically through variations in bloodstream, respiratory rate or facial expressions.

In contrast, the second level refers to the subsequent cognitive impressions, which emerge exclusively in the conscious plane of the individual.

They constitute the mental interpretation that the intellect elaborates after having experienced the initial physical reaction.

The physiological and temporal manifestation of the state of mind

The fundamental disparity between the two concepts lies deeply in their chronological component and their subjective influence.

The organic response of alertness occurs in the first instance as a preventive and immediate biological mechanism; the body registers a stimulus and triggers a cascade of biochemical signals long before the brain assimilates the impact.

Only at a later temporal stage does cognitive assimilation appear, at which point the individual fully perceives that he or she is experiencing a specific disturbance.

While the original biological discharges are phenomena dictated by physiology in response to a threat, the resulting conscious assimilations are profoundly shaped by the subject's past memories, personal belief system and internal narratives.

That is, the initial stimulus belongs to the present, but the prolongation of the state belongs to the psyche.

Summary

By way of conclusion, it is imperative to internalize that biology acts first and cognition acts second, separating instinct from interpretation. Organic reflexes are bursts of real-time data, evolutionarily designed to calibrate our physiology to environmental variations, operating autonomously and unconsciously.

In contrast, feelings represent the rational and conscious digestion of that physical response, always sifted through our historical baggage and convictions.

Understanding this exact chronological sequence endows the individual with an invaluable tactical tool: the ability to observe the initial bodily jolt connected to reality, without getting carried away by the inaccurate beliefs that the mind may generate a posteriori.
