Transcription Creating appropriate emotional patterns

From Reaction to Deliberate Creation

One of the most empowering ideas of emotional intelligence is that our emotional responses are not set in stone, but learned patterns.

And like any learned pattern, it can be consciously redesigned.

Instead of being victims of our emotional habits, we can become the deliberate architects of our internal states, cultivating those that serve us and bring us closer to the life we desire.

Using the PALM Model as a Design Guide

The process for creating a new emotional pattern rests on the PALM (Posture, Attention, Language, Meaning) model, which we now use not to analyze, but to build.

Let's say we want to create a pattern of confidence to face a challenging situation.

  • Posture (Physiology): What is the physiology of confidence? We would deliberately put ourselves in that posture.

Back straight, shoulders back, head up, deep, calm breathing, a subtle smile.

By adopting the posture of confidence, we send an unequivocal signal to our brain to start generating the corresponding chemistry.

  • Attention (Focus): What does a confident person focus on? Instead of possible failures, we would deliberately direct our attention to our resources: our past successes, our strengths, the times we have overcome similar challenges.

We create a "mental file" of evidence of our own ability.

  • Language: What does a confident person say to themselves? We would change our internal dialogue.

Instead of "I don't know if I can," we would repeat phrases to ourselves like "I am ready for this," "I have the resources to handle it," "every challenge is an opportunity to grow."

  • Meaning: What meaning does a confident person give to the situation? We would reframe the event.

Instead of seeing it as a "threat" that tests our courage, we would interpret it as an "exciting challenge," a game in which we can demonstrate our skills.

Practice Makes PerfectNeural Master

Creating a new emotional pattern is like blazing a new path in a forest. At first, it takes effort and focus.

We have to consciously "force" the new posture, the new approach, the new language, and the new meaning.

However, each time we do it, we reinforce that new neural pathway.

With repeated practice,What was initially a deliberate effort becomes an increasingly natural and automatic response.

It is literally a brain reprogramming process that allows us to actively shape our character and emotional destiny.
