From the Questionnaire to the Personal Map

Once we have completed the Emotional Quotient (EQ) questionnaire as honestly as possible, the next step is to transform that collection of answers into a clear and useful map of our emotional profile.

This interpretation process is what gives meaning to the assessment and tells us precisely where we should focus our energy to grow.

The Competency Scoring Process

Generally, the questions on an EI test are grouped thematically, with each group corresponding to one of the five pillars of emotional intelligence: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Motivation, Empathy, and Social Skills.

The procedure is simple: add up the points obtained in the questions assigned to each pillar.

For example, if questions 1, 6, 11, 16, and 21 assess Self-Awareness, we will add up the scores we gave ourselves on those five statements. to get our total score in that specific competency.

By repeating this process for each of the five pillars, we get a breakdown profile that shows us our relative strengths and weaknesses.

Understanding Score Ranges

Total scores per pillar are often interpreted according to pre-established ranges.

Although these can vary slightly between different tests, the general logic is as follows:

  • Low Range (e.g., 6-12 points): A score in this range indicates a clear area for improvement. It is a sign that this particular competency requires our priority attention.

Far from being a cause for discouragement, it is a valuable discovery that tells us exactly where to start working.

  • Mid-Range (e.g., 13-23 points): A result in this area suggests that we have a solid foundation in that competency, but there is still considerable room for development and refinement. It is a good starting point, but we should not be complacent.
  • High-Range (e.g., 24-30 points): A high score reflects remarkable mastery of that emotional skill. It is one of our strengths, a resource we can draw on while we work in other areas.

The True Value of Assessment

It is crucial to reiterate that this is not a pass or fail exam. There are no "good" or "bad" scores in an absolute sense.

The true value of this diagnostic tool lies in the clarity it provides.

It is a personalized map that shows us the terrain of our inner world, allowing us to plan our development journey strategically and intelligently,focusing on the areas that will provide the greatest return in terms of well-being and personal effectiveness.
