Transcription Accessories
Decoration accessories are the objects that embellish and aesthetically complement a space. These objects captivate the senses by providing interesting colors, shapes and textures that help to round out spaces with elements that strongly represent the personality and tastes of the inhabitant.
The accessories allow the decorator to distinguish social or personal zones within the space and make the decorative principles - balance, harmony, rhythm, emphasis, etc. - more perceptible, always following the main decorative line.
When decorating spaces, two types of accessories can be distinguished:
- Functional accessories
- Decorative accessories
Functional accessories
Functional accessories are those items that, besides embellishing and complementing the spaces, fulfill other functions; for example: a coat rack with an attractive design placed next to the door of the house, can provide its inhabitants, in addition to the visual pleasure, the feeling of relaxation and rest that causes them to leave their bags and jackets perfectly tidy after a long day of work.
The number of functional accessories that we should place depends on their use in the spaces, for example: you may consider that in the bathroom the only accessories you use are the mirror and the basket.
Decorative accessories
Decorative accessories are objects that embellish and complement the space aesthetically without being used for any other function. Decorative accessories can be of diverse nature and condition, however the most used can be grouped as follows:
- Works of art: They can be paintings, engravings, sculptural elements, photographs and pieces of craftsmanship.
- Collections: Collections consist of the grouping of objects of a certain condition. The objects are usually very varied, however there are some more popular themes such as collecting antiques, dolls, perfume bottles, miniature cars, etcetera.
- Decorative lights: Wall lights, decorative lamps -table or floor lamps-, colored LED strips, etcetera.
- Man-made objects: Cushions, pillows, curtains, bedspreads, artificial flowers and plants, etcetera.
- Natural objects: Stuffed animals, stones, sea shells, volcanic rocks, etcetera.
- Ornamental plants: Plants used in interiors should be carefully selected according to their light and humidity needs in order to keep them healthy.
How to place decorative accessories?
When arranging a space using accessories, the most important thing is to break the monotony, to avoid boredom; it is useless to have excellent pieces if we do not place them taking into account harmony, balance, scale and other principles of interior design that allow us to create an adequate visual interest.
If you have decorative objects that have some characteristics in common (color, shape, material, etc.), you can group them and form a set that is attractive for its harmony. Do not forget to place within the group an object that breaks the rule, remember that too much harmony can also be tiring.
On the other hand, if the decorative objects you have do not have any common feature, to achieve visual unity of the set you should place the group of different objects very close to each other, and choose a piece from the set to place it slightly apart from the rest.
