Transcription The illusion of control

The illusion of control is a cognitive bias that leads us to believe that we can influence or dominate situations over which, in reality, we have little or no real control.

It also manifests itself in overestimating our influence in certain contexts, without taking into account the multiplicity of other factors involved.

Belief in Control over the Uncontrollable

This bias is evident when we think that everything will go according to our plans simply because we have meticulously elaborated them, without considering the unforeseen events that are beyond our control.

Even if we have planned a day in detail, a flight delay or an unforeseen event can disrupt everything, proving that we cannot control all circumstances.

Certain streams of personal development sometimes foster this illusion by suggesting that we can influence the world through positive thinking or by sending out "good vibes."

This is similar to a soccer fan's belief that his or her emotions and gestures influence the outcome of the game.

The Placebo Effect and Perception of Control

Part of this illusion may be related to the placebo effect, where belief in the effectiveness of an action or substance produces a positive effect, even though there is no direct cause.

Believing that we can influence our destiny, even if it is an illusion, can make life more bearable.

This bias is very evident in pathological gambling, where the gambler believes that his or her skill or rituals can control chance.

Reality vs. Controlling Ego

We cannot force a tree to grow, nor can we force people to always act as we wish.

The illusion of control is magnified when we have some real influence, leading us to overestimate our contribution, for example, in a work team.
