Attribution theory is a fundamental concept in psychology that studies how people infer the causes of events and behavior, both their own and that of others.

It focuses on what or to whom we assign responsibility for what happens, especially when it comes to mistakes, failures or setbacks.

This form of "blaming" or assigning causality can follow patterns that, if erroneous, become cognitive biases.

Dimensions of Causal Attribution

When we interpret an event, especially a negative one such as failing an exam or failing a project, our explanations usually vary along two main dimensions.

The first dimension is the locus of control: ¿La causa es interna o externa? Es decir, ¿lo que ha pasado es principalmente por mi culpa (causas internas como mi habilidad o esfuerzo) o por culpa de factores ajenos a mí (causas externas como la dificultad de la tarea, la suerte o las acciones de otras personas)?

The second dimension is stability: ¿La causa es estable o variable? ¿Se debe a factores que se mantienen constantes a lo largo del tiempo (estables, como mi inteligencia o la dificultad intrínseca de una asignatura) o a factores que pueden cambiar (variables, como mi esfuerzo puntual o una crisis económica pasajera)?

Four Main Types of Explanations

Four basic types of attributions or explanations that people tend to give to events emerge from the combination of these two dimensions:

  • Internal and Stable Causes: Atribuir el resultado a factores propios que se perciben como difíciles de cambiar. Por ejemplo, "He fracasado porque no tengo suficiente inteligencia para esto" (se atribuye a la capacidad innata).
  • External and Stable Causes: Achacar el resultado a factores ajenos que se consideran constantes. Por ejemplo, "He suspendido porque la asignatura es intrínsecamente muy difícil" o "la culpa es del profesor porque no sabe explicar".
