Transcription Environmental Conditions of Evaluation
Control of Physical Variables
The validity of a psychological evaluation depends to a great extent on the control of environmental variables.
The physical space where the evaluation is performed (office or laboratory) should be neutral and comfortable.
Lighting is a critical factor; it should be sufficient to allow effortless reading and drawing, preferably natural or white light, avoiding shadows that may distort perception in projective tests.
Temperature also plays a fundamental role; an extremely cold or hot environment generates somatic discomfort that distracts the patient, alters his or her attentional capacity and can generate irritability or anxiety that is not the subject's own, but reactive to the environment.
Privacy and Furnishings
Privacy is non-negotiable. The space must guarantee that the session will not be interrupted and that sound does not penetrate the walls, ensuring confidentiality and allowing the patient to feel safe to express him/herself.
The furniture should be appropriate to the age and size of the patient; in the case of children, tables and chairs adjusted to their height are required so that they can execute graphic or manipulative tests comfortably.
The work surface should be completely smooth, free of irregularities that affect the tracing in drawing tests, which could lead to erroneous interpretations about motor coordination or organicity.
Contaminating Variables
The psychologist should be aware of "contaminating variables" during the session. These include external noises, cell phone interruptions, or the presence of unauthorized third parties in the room.
In addition, the evaluator must ensure that the patient is in a fit psychophysical condition to be evaluated; applying an intelligence or attention test to a person who has not slept, who is in acute physical pain or who is under the effects of substances will invalidate the results.
It is the responsibility of the professional to reschedule the session if the environmental conditions or the subject are not optimal to guarantee a reliable result.
Summary
The validity of an evaluation depends on the control of physical variables, requiring a space with adequate lighting and comfortable temperature to avoid somatic distractions or anxiety in the patient.
Privacy is a non-negotiable factor to ensure confidentiality, having furniture adapted to the height of the subject to allow a comfortable execution of the graphic tests.
The evaluator must control contaminating variables such as external noise and ensure that the patient is in a suitable psychophysical condition, being responsible for rescheduling the session if they are not.
