Rotter's Incomplete Sentences Test

Verbal Projection Mechanism

This semi-projective test uses language as a vehicle to explore psychic structure.

It is based on completing a series of sentence stems (e.g. "My mother...", "The future...") with the first thing that comes to mind, under the premise of free association and stimulus-response.

It allows the assessment of areas such as family, self-concept, goals, impulses and moods.

It is a versatile tool that can be applied collectively and offers quick qualitative information about the individual's conscious and preconscious conflicts.

Quantitative Scoring System

The scoring system classifies responses into three categories: Positive (P), Conflicted (C) and Neutral (N).

Positive responses indicate adaptation and well-being, scored from 2 to 0 according to their intensity (P1=2, P2=1, P3=0).

Conflictual Responses reveal maladjustment or problems, scored from 4 to 6 according to severity (C1=4 minor problems, C2=5 more serious symptoms, C3=6 severe conflicts).

Neutral responses (N=3) are stereotyped or emotionally uncharged.

A total score below 120 points suggests a stable personality, while scores above 150 indicate a significant maladjustment that requires attention.

Summary

This semi-projective test uses sentence stems that the subject must complete by free association. It allows to verbally explore conscious and preconscious conflicts about family, self-concept and per
