Transcription The 5 Elements of the Agile Coach DNA
Beyond the general competency model, there is a complementary approach known as the Agile Coach DNA, proposed by Manuel Pimentel.
This model does not replace the core competencies (such as coaching, mentoring, etc.).
Rather, it offers a different perspective on the key focus areas through which an Agile Coach enables and fosters agile change within an organization.
It focuses on how the coach interacts with the system (individuals, teams, organization) to improve productivity, behaviors and bottom line results in product or solution development.
This approach is considered more practical and descriptive of the coach's day-to-day activities compared to other certification models that may be less specific about content.
Introduction to the Model
The Agile Coach DNA model is presented as a framework for understanding the five major "functions" or levers that a coach uses to catalyze agile transformation.
These are not sequential phases, but interconnected elements that the coach works on continuously.
The purpose is to provide effective agile enablement, guiding the organization toward greater adaptability and value delivery.
This model, authorized by its creator for use and dissemination, complements the competency view by detailing the coach's specific areas of intervention.
Improvement (Catalyst), Ownership, Barrier Elimination, Competency Development, Awareness, and Coaching.
The five core elements of the Agile Coach DNA are:
- Catalyze Improvement: Act as an agent that drives and facilitates a culture of continuous improvement at all levels.
- Promote Awareness: Help individuals, teams and the organization to be aware of their current problems, needs, gaps and possible solution options.
- Increase Ownership: Promote responsibility, autonomy and engagement of individuals and teams about their work and processes.
- Develop Competencies: Help individuals and teams to acquire and improve the necessary skills (both technical and interpersonal) to work effectively in an agile environment.
- Facilitate Barrier Removal: Do not remove barriers directly by the team, but help them develop the capabilities to identify and overcome barriers on their own.
These five elements define the main areas of action and focus for an Agile Coach seeking to generate sustainable agile change.
