Transcription Reading in acceptance speeches
Reading is a widely used resource during the presentation of a speech. This type of communicative act can be very extensive or contain large amounts of information. Several techniques are used for this purpose, in order not to lose the connection with the audience during the moments in which we are reading. In the case of acceptance speeches, reading can be a complex method to use, as these speeches usually present a more natural language, conveying a message of appreciation.
During the course of this session, we will be delving into some of the most important points regarding this topic. This will help us to perfect our presentations when developing an acceptance speech.
Why should I limit the reading in acceptance speeches?
Acceptance speeches have very particular characteristics that distinguish them from other speeches. With these, the speaker prepares a speech to thank the audience, event developers and other people involved for their achievements. In the same way, an award or tribute must be received that will awaken a strong emotional state. This leads us to move naturally around the stage and exchange in a pleasant and spontaneous way.
None of the above means that acceptance speeches should be developed through improvisation. In fact, it is one of the communicative acts where the speaker must be more precise. Acceptance speeches are prepared in advance. We must do some reading before the event and try to memorize a basic script for the event.
Taking into account the aforementioned characteristics, there is very little room for reading. It is not coherent, before the public image, that we need to read a message that comes from our emotions and reflects our deepest gratitude. Including moments of readings, although not impossible, is something we have to do very carefully and according to a series of basic rules.
How to include moments of readings during the presentation?
Before including a moment of reading during the presentation of an acceptance speech, you must be sure that such reading is essential for the good development of the speech. Perhaps you are planning to quote a specific phrase, show a statistic or a complex result to paraphrase. On these occasions you can incorporate brief moments of readings, as long as you do not lose the connection with your audience.
These brief moments of readings should be done in a paused way, with a permanent visual interspersion towards the audience. This means that you will have to read a sentence, pausing to glide your gaze around the audience. This type of reading is complex and requires a lot of practice and rehearsal.
It is important that you do not use it to say thank you or to express aspects of your emotional state. It is understood that your thanks are genuine and you do not need to write down names or institutions to remember them. Nor is the speaker expected to read messages such as: I am very excited; I am so happy to be with you; I am surprised; etc. Emotions should be shown naturally, there is no need for a written piece of paper telling us how we feel.
It is understood that this type of scenario can be somewhat hostile, especially when you do not have much previous experience. As a result, our nerves come to the surface and we are exposed to making mistakes. In any case, reading is not a smart solution. Focus on preparing well in advance and rehearsing as many times as necessary until you have a firm grasp of your speech.
