Transcription The influence of tobacco on sleep

There are many harmful effects on human health caused by tobacco consumption, including multiple respiratory, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular problems, and a considerable increase in the probability of developing cancer, among others. Smoking is one of the most harmful and addictive habits that exist. Although all of the above is well known, some people ignore the great impact that cigarettes can have on the quality of our sleep.

Several universities have focused their efforts on investigating how addictive substances such as coffee, alcohol and tobacco are related to the way in which we fall asleep and develop our sleep. Contrary to what we thought, tobacco can affect our sleep even more than coffee, which is why it is important to maintain healthy habits and routines that keep us away from this potentially harmful drug for our health.

During the development of this guide, we will be analyzing some of the consequences that the consumption of cigarettes can have on the quality of our sleep, with the aim that we can deepen our knowledge about this process so necessary for the normal functioning of the human organism.

Snoring

Snoring is one of the most frequent respiratory disorders in the human population, affecting around 20-30% of men and between 7-9% of women. Snoring affects the quality of our sleep and is related to the presence of high daytime sleepiness. Snoring, as a respiratory disorder, is associated with a series of risk factors such as obesity, age, consumption of certain drugs or chemical substances, airway malformations and tobacco consumption. Tobacco can cause the appearance of snoring in humans more easily. Snoring is an effect produced by the vibration of certain oropharyngeal structures. These structures suffer severe inflammation due to tobacco, so we must consider it as a highly influential element in the appearance of these annoying sounds.

Finally, it should be noted that some studies associate the appearance of snoring with drops in nicotine levels in the blood. Nicotine is a highly addictive substance that tends to decrease its presence in the bloodstream very quickly, which is why when we sleep, when we are not smoking, it can cause an increase in snoring due to the decrease in nicotine.

Increased insomnia

When studies have been carried out on addictive substances such as caffeine, tobacco and alcohol, it has been observed that tobacco and alcohol tend to instill insomnia more than caffeine itself. The ba
