Transcription Conceptualization of conformity

Conformity is a fundamental type of social influence that involves a change in a person's behavior or beliefs as a result of real or imagined pressure from other people or a group.

It is a ubiquitous phenomenon in social life, leading us to adjust our actions, and sometimes our thoughts, to align with the norms or behavior of those around us.

Definition and Scope of the Phenomenon

Conformity occurs when individuals give in to group pressure, modifying their behavior to fit the expectations or actions of the majority.

This pressure need not be explicit or coercive; Often, the mere presence of others and the perception of their behaviors or beliefs are enough to induce change.

This phenomenon encompasses a wide range of situations, from adopting popular fashions or trends to following unwritten social norms about how to behave in public or even modifying perceptual judgments in the face of opposing group opinion.

Conformity as Social Adaptation

From a functional perspective, conformity can be adaptive. Following group norms and behaviors facilitates social interaction, promotes cohesion, and avoids social rejection or sanction.
