Why would someone seek an audience during an emotional crisis? Because they know that viewers, lacking the full context of the story, tend to judge based on what they see in the moment: one person "suffering" (the manipulator) and another person who appears to be the cause of that suffering (the real victim).

The mechanics of this manipulation is based on shame and social pressure. When the manipulator stages a screaming and crying scene in public, the real victim immediately feels the brunt of the stares from strangers, which are usually of disapproval or hostility towards the one they perceive as the "bad guy" in the movie.
This extreme discomfort and fear of social judgment act as a potent catalyst for submission.
To stop the public humiliation and make the stares stop, the victim often gives in to the manipulator's demands, giving them what they want just to end the spectacle. It is emotional blackmail executed in social theater.
