Neurobiological reprocessing (EMDR)

Since trauma from psychological violence is stored in a fragmented and visceral way in the brain, advanced techniques are essential.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is considered the "gold standard" for treating these sequelae.

This technique is not based on simply talking, but on stimulating the brain hemispheres (through eye movements or tapping) to make it easier for the brain to "digest" the traumatic memories that have become stuck.

The goal is for the memory of the abuse to stop being activated as a present threat and become filed away as a past event, deactivating the painful emotional charge and physical distress response associated with those memories.

Dismantling the voice of the abuser (CBT)

In parallel, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) plays a crucial role in cognitive restructuring.

During the relationship, the abuser has implanted in the victim's mind a series of distorted beliefs ("I caused the abuse", "I am useless", "no one else will love me").

CBT helps to identify these intrusive thoughts and to question their validity, replacing them with a realistic and compassionate narrative.

It works to exorcise the aggressor's "internalized voice" so that the victim stops attacking herself with the same insults and put-downs she heard from her partner.

It is a process of mental cleansing to regain self-judgment and self-efficacy.

The therapeutic relationship and post-traumatic growth

Beyond the techniques, the bond with the therapist acts as a model of a healthy relationship.

For many victims, the therapist is the first authority figure who radically validates their reality ("I believe you") without judging or attempting to manipulate them.

This reassurance serves as a "scaffolding" for the patient to relearn to trust another human being and, fundamentally, to regain confidence in her own perception.
